Anyone here knows where to get pushbutton switches similar to those found in cameras? (depressing the button halfway would trigger the autofocus while depressing it fully would then activate the shutter mechanism)

try Newark electronics or Allied electronics

any idea what keyword to use... any technical term for the type of switch that I mentioned?

I don't know of a precise defintion for that sort of switch action but you could try "passing contact" or "momentary contact".

Some cars have power window buttons where pressing it in halfway makes the window move, and pressing it in fully (past the heavy detent) makes the window automatically move all the way (even after releasing the button).

But they're typically double buttons (Up/Down).

I suspect these are all custom buttons since they are all small and often have surrounding (lever) functions and angle/board oddities.

Let us know if you actually find any!

"Otto Controls has some"

flmike2001 can't seem to find it in their catalog... do you know the specific name of the pushbutton?

Hmm, thought I posted this yesterday, must have had some kind of problem. Crane Control push buttons offer this for woking with 2 speed motors, they are very common in that industry. I know for sure that Square-D has them, maybe also Woodhead and others who sell crane control pendants.

I’ve used a standard 22mm operator with a combination of standard and early break contact blocks. The different blocks operate at different stages of the button travel

I use idec but I suspect all the manufacturers produce something similar

Some bridge cranes have 3-position or even 5-position buttons. Essentially a miniature version of the accelerator pedal on a car but a lot of people are incapable of learning how to depress the button a little to control speed.

getafix, as mc5w mentioned. For cranes try DEMAG cranes and hoist. A wide range of switch position are available.
