PVC foam plasticizer migration issue

Howdy all,

I am considering spec'ing a flexible PVC foam with an acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive backing. This material would be stuck down to a plasticizer-sensitive substrate. Do you think that the plasticizers in the PVC foam could migrate through the PSA and harm the substrate?

I've considered using foams that don't have plasticizers (silicone, urethane), but I would prefer to use PVC foam if possible.

There are several "plasticizer-free" PVC foam tapes out there but mainly for health reasons and not for migrating to the substrate. PVC is cost effective and usually the plasticizer is not an issue but consider if you are going to expose to elevated temps or conditions that will facilitate migration.

EVA foams are relatively inexpensive and are plasticises free.

The PVC plasticises will always migrate to some extent if present, but some plasticises are much more resistant than others.

If your PVC supplier will provide you with the information as to the types of plasticises, you can treat the adhesive with a concentrated application then you can assess the risk.
