Dear All,

In the asme 31.3 table 331.1.3 exemption to mandatory PWHT. Mentioned that For P5A, group no.1- less than or equal to 16mm thickness -groove-Mandatory pre-heat is applied (see attached file for details) is exempted to PWHT.

Our project:
We have tie-in activity the existing pipe thickness is 20mm and the material specification is 10CrMo9.10. The new material to be connected is 10mm thickness and 321H grade. Tapering to be done on existing pipe to match the new piping, since the joint thickness is below 16mm, is it applicable the mentioned table?

Thanks in advance.

321H is not P5A material, neither is 10Cr.

Your implied level of understanding suggests you should instead retain a welding engineer.

Dear Mr. DVWE,

As per scope of work the new piping is 321H grade P8 material and it will be welded to existing piping in which the material specification is 10CrMo9.10.
When I refer to asme section 9. The 10CrMo9.10 is belongs to P5A materials. Since as per 31.3, PWHT required for P5A. Please advice.

In that case, then yes, I agree with your reasoning to exempt from PWHT.
