Hi,

I am a Mechanical QA/QC with CWI, painting,API, NDT certification. I was wondering if there is any certain areas where people think QA/QC personnel should improve/increase there knowledge.

For example are there areas that design/ construction engineers find that the QA/QC personnel are weak in, and it would be a benefit to the project if they were stronger in this area.

Or maybe people have found that it would have been beneficial if someone had a greater understanding of a specific area of metallurgy ect..

I look forward to people's opinions.

In general I would say just learning more about the processes used to make the product at your specific company. If you do a lot of milling and precision grinding, those would be a good start. If your guys are just cutting material +/- 1/8 but then are doing certified welding on those pieces, then the machining techniques don't matter much but knowing more about welding could help. I say this because the better you know how to do something, the better you can diagnose and make corrections when a part doesn't come out right. Learning more about machining/manufacturing has been a huge help to me on the design side.

Learn more about the manufacturing processes and NDE processes used and have full understanding of the Codes and contract requirements. With time yu shuld be able to identify the "usual suspects" that will be involved in lack of quality or Contract/Code nonconformance.

By learning more about the processes you will be able to prevent problems for happening instead of finding them after they happen.

You have all the relevant certificates. Try to do a course on Project Quality Assurance. That would give you a bird's eye view of the overall project / fabrication quality issues and how to go about with them.

Do you have any project quality assurance courses you would recommend?

Google PQM (with focus on QA) online courses and you get a lot...all for free but you need to buy the certificate.

However, I suggest you, based on your location, to look for such courses in an university near you, that would offer you the PQM module preferably in online or hybrid (online + offline) mode.

I always prefer learning from a human better than from a computer.

It won't surprise everyone to hear me advise that you also get a little knowledge of the GD&T system. Many people have mastered the operation of equipment such as CMMs yet still get intimidated when they encounter geometric tolerancing symbols on a drawing.
