Hi All,

In this context what is meant by "centroid of the ring"? Is it the centroid of the ring structural crosssection or centroid of the ring itself? What is an example of a structural discountinuity mentioned here? Is a longitudinal shell weld joint considered a structural discontinuity?

This is the geometric center of the ring's cross-sectional shape (e.g., rectangular, circular, or custom geometry), not the physical centroid of the ring as a whole in the vessel.

Example of a Structural Discontinuity​

  • Changes in wall thickness: Section UG-80
  • Openings and nozzles: Section UG-36 to UG-45
  • Supports or lugs: Section Appendix G and UG-22
  • Flange connections: Section Appendix 2
  • Reinforcement rings or stiffeners: Sections UG-29 and UG-30
  • longitudinal shell weld joint:
