Hello,
I am a Texas EIT (Engineer in training), passed FE exam, have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering
I don’t have the 4 years’ experience under a Structural Professional Engineer yet
I just started working under a SE engineer 3 months ago

My Question is :
As an EIT, Is it possible to sit for the (SE Exam) with no previous experience under a SE holder?
Just the exam and I will apply for the license after 4 years

Every state has slightly different rules. Some states are allowing you to sit for the exam without any experience (i.e. straight out of school) others still require you to have a certain amount of experience (for most states it is 4 years) before sitting for the exam. Call your board and ask, or, I'm sure the info is also available on their website. I don't think any of the states require the experience to be under another licensed SE to sit for the exam, just a PE, and there are some exceptions to that as well.

Hi Sam1993 - In Texas you can take the PE or SE exam without fulfilling the experience requirement. They decoupled the exam and experience requirement a few years ago. In order to get your license you will need to pass the exam and complete the experience requirements and complete the application.

Agree with the others. California is the only one I know of that requires being under a SE to take the SE. (And as another noted: there are some ways around that.)

I am a SE in Illinois....and they did not require any time under a SE (of any state).

But all this is something to verify with the board of the state you are going for.

I became an Illinois SE with out-of-state experience under a PE, and have a PE in my state through reciprocity. I don't know the rules for California, but I know that there were a lot of test takers from Washington in Illinois attempting to pass and get licensed through reciprocity their state.

THANK YOU ALL
I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR REPLIES

I would council being patient and figuring out the requirements for all of the states for which you might plausibly want to get licensed in the future. That way, you won't get burned as I did. After being an SE for a decade, I had to go back and take a Civil PE exam in order to pick up my Oregon license. That was not fun.

Like people said above every state is different. I actually took the SE exam before ever taking the PE exam. A lot of states now let you take either the SE exam or the PE exam to get your PE license. Then I found out that some states like California and Washington do not accept SE exam in lieu of PE exam. So I had to go back and take the PE exam too.
