I am guessing:

The pointy thing anchors a skin element, not yet applied.

The rectangular holes in the struts are clearance for a wrench, used to tighten a fastener between the strut end and the node connector.

;-)

Next time you're that close, stick a camera in the hole.

Mike is undoubtedly correct about the holes. As to the "pointy thing", I would ask the spaceframe manufacturer.

What is an "Eden Project"?

Thanks, Ussuri. In the photos, the "pointy things" can be seen, and abseiling is mentioned for cleaning. Maybe they are to assist in anchoring or guiding the abseiling ropes?

Thank you all, guys. According to your replies, I think the two usages you mentioned for the pointy thing are quite reasonable.

Given I now live in a state where certain herbs are legal, I wondered who was making the "joint of eden"....
