I am trying to split a signal with minimal loss to one of the outputs of the splitter going to the original destination. If I throw a resistor in the path of the second splitter to the new destination, will the original destination have less than a 3 db loss?

I just read my post and feel it needs clarification. I am trying to tap into one signal, without disturing it as much as possible. If I throw a resistor in the path of the line tapping the original signal, will the original signal have less than 3db loss? What other ways could i minimize signal loss from the original signal.

You haven't stated the frequency of operation and the nature of the transmission line. You could for example use a 10dB directional coupler. In this case the insertion loss would be about 1dB. The bottom line is we need more information!

How much are you willing to attenuate the tapped off signal? If you only need 1% of the original signal then the insertion loss in the main path will be small. Just remember that a passive device can at best split the power.

sorry, it is an e-1 transmission line. i dont want the signal to be attenuated more than 1 db. If the tapping line has higher impedience than the line being tapped would there be less voltage taken away from the tapped line?
