Hey there. I am looking for a piece of hardware that functions like a seatbelt buckle. It must, however, function with cordage instead of webbing. hopefully it will be cylindrical in shape. It must be "somewhat" sturdy and light weight - rated to ~200#.

I need to join two cords (1/8" spectra) under a tension. what this means is that the latch must engage without much relaxation in the line. The cords are fixed length, as is the spanned distance. I tried to use caribeaner- type joiner, but once the reciever settled onto the loop, the line was slack. or it woudl be too difficult to join in the first place.

something like this:

but intended for load holding would be sweet.

any ideas?

Ball and groove coupler modified to crimp or glue cord in place. Just a thought.

It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all.

Perhaps you look for sthg the like of a bike lock, where the latch catches the groove within the body of the lock under spring tension and is released by turning the key.

Spectra - a bit like steel wire rope - doesn't really stretch, so I appreciate your problem.

If you can relax on the "cylindrical" bit of the requirement, you might find that a snap shackle does the trick.

I'm thinking about wrapping the end of the rope with something akin to that on the end of a shoelace and plugging it into a Legris coupling. Or cement cord into a short section of tubing and plug into same fitting. Strictly unwarranted.

MintJulep, knots in ropes reduce strength of rope by 50% as a rule of thumb.

You could use something like these quick release hooks from Mcmaster, there should be minimal loosening of the wire after mating because of the location of the pivot.

Will some kind of cleat work? Maybe with a single line?

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

One simple cheap solution is just nut and bolt, if the release doesn't need to be instant. Attach the cords just slack enough to get a few easy turns for a hold, then turn the rest of the way to tighten the cords.

For example these with suitable holes ready:
Eye Nut Hanger
Machine Bolt Hanger

But yeah, not quick release...

Many of the swivels at this page are similar to the general idea is similar to the snap-catch swivel that the OP started with:

Some are too heavy, some are too light... Maybe with a little more searching a more suitable fastener can be found.
Replace the clevis/cotter pin with a quick-release pin like these:

STF

some great answers here! thanks all!
A bit more info for the curious:
it is part of a consumer based portable folding structure, so needs to be made/unmade easily and repeatably. It may be good if the user can modify the final tension, so I really like the cleat idea. But the snap shackles are exactly what I was trying to avoid designing myself before I decided to look at the concentric cylinder avenue! I've never seen them before in reality.

thanks all!

Perhaps looking at window shade pull hardware?
