Hi all,

I am just starting with NX7, used SolidEdge before.

I am playing around with sketching at the moment and am looking for function that would allow me to select an EXISTING line (which is sketched on parallel plane in the background) so i can include it in my sketch, rather than creating a new one.

I remember that doing this was very easy with SolidEdge, and could be done using INCLUDE function in sketch mode.

I am now looking for something similar, so i do not have to draw the lines all over again.

Also, how can I draw polygon in Sketch mode? is there an automatic way to draw one?

When you're in the second Sketch, just go to...

Insert -> Recipe Curve -> Project Curve...

...and select the curve(s) which you wish to 'include' in your new Sketch.

There is one thing which you will need to keep in mind and that is that if the curve(s) which you wish to reference in a Sketch are either features themselves, or part of a feature, such as your case where the curve is part of another Sketch, they must have a lower 'Timestamp' number in the Model History than the Sketch which you are currently working in.

As for 'polygon' objects, we've added that feature to the Sketcher in NX 7.5.

Perhaps, but if the original curve is part of a Sketch then one could assume that it's already constrained and therefore you'd expect to wish to constrain other curves relative to IT. Besides, if it's part of another Sketch how can I ADD the curve to my Sketch in the first place? The curve can only be in one Sketch or the other, not both. No, I think 'Project Curve' is the most useful in situations like this.

If you want to effectively project a line as opposed to any other type of curve into a sketch then the way that has the most utility is to simple construct a new line inside the second sketch between the end points of the line that is external to that sketch. The reason is simple. The sketch retains the associativity to the method of construction but allows you to quick trim and quick extend the line. For projected curves those editing functions will cause associativity to be lost.
