"non manifold solid" error 2

Hi All
I am trying to perform a boolean subtract using a solid body as the target and a sheet body as the tool.
(In effect trimming a solid with a sheet)

However I get an error saying "non manifold solid" and no result.

Any ideas?

You cannot subtract a sheet body, only another solid. You can trim to it using the trim body command.
 
Hi ewh

"trim body"
seems to only let me use planes or primative shapes as tool bodies.
Is there a way of using a irregular sheet body?

If you are using a sewn sheet body, it has to be continuous with no gaps. I have had no problem trimming to irregular shapes, and often use the trim command to double check that my sewn sheets are indeed continuous. Wether it is a sheet with a single face or a sewn sheet, it must be as large or larger than the body you are trimming, totally covering the resulting solid face(s).
 
Along with ewh's advice, a sheet or a sewn sheet body can 'scoop' out of the target sold as well, as long as all edges of the sheet are outside of the solid body.

Make sure your tool sheet body isn't tangent with any of the solid's faces where the sheet & solid first intersect....this can give you a non-manifold solid error as well.

Thanks for that clarification. Your right and it is important that the surface edges are outside the solid.

No problem, just trying to cover all the areas. It can sometimes be tough to answer a question in one post, plus different users see different aspects or approaches to an answer.

I saw that you said you sometimes use Trim Body to check your sewn sheets. Were you aware you could do this with Examine Geometry & choosing only the boundaries? If you see the number of boundaries exceeding the number of exposed edges, then you know that your sewn sheet body has holes in it somewhere & if they are big enough they will be highlighted.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try it next time. Sometimes projects get too hot to try new methods. I guess it's time for some retraining!
 
For checking just sewn sheets, it's not time consuming at all. Just make sure to blank all other geometry that you don't wish to have analyzed.

I think it's under Analysis -> Examine Geometry. It's a pretty simple task to use & has many other options that are a bit more technical than boundary checks.
