Hi,

I am playing around with the turning application in NX5.

I uploaded a picture of the stock forging I am working with. You can imagine the finished shape of the part...

Now, I cannot for the life of me get the "turn workpiece" to generate anything.

My MCS is set right...I choose the native UG models for my part and blank, and then the turn workpiece simply fails.

Is this a software limitation?
The finished part is complex, containing flats, slots, bosses, holes, etc... Will these complicate the "spun" outline?

Any suggestions on how to approach this?

Yes - The spun outline fails with complex parts. You are better off simplifying the model and using the intersection curves from modeling.
If your using assemblies link the body and delete the faces where the cross section passes through the solid. If your working in the same file as the model you can extract a copy of the solid and delete the faces. The direct modeling tools in NX5 and Synchronous Modeling tools in NX6 work great for this purpose. The lathe cross section from Manufacturing is not even worth using.

I am very dissapointed with the spun outline it does not take very much for it to fail. On the image you sent you may only need to remove the hole to get the spun outline to work.

Thanks John.

I kind of figured that was my issue however, being unfamiliar with the turning application it was just as likely that I was messing something up!
Thank you for confirming it!!!
