I tried looking around for an official code interpretation, but couldnt find anything.

We have a customer seeking an integrally reinforced nozzle similar to ASME Section VIII-1, Fig. UG-40 (e-1), is it the intent of the code to limit the credit of "A5" available reinforcement to the height of “te” even when there is additional excess integral metal within the reinforcement zone? If so, does anyone know the reasoning behind this?

Fig.UG-40(e) is clear to me: if the thickened portion is shorter that 2.5t[sub]x[/sub] use (e-1) and the limit of reinforcement is the smaller of 2.5t and t[sub]e[/sub]+2.5t[sub]n[/sub]; otherwise use (e-2). Then all the metal available within the limits can be used for reinforcement, it is not the intent of the dotted lines in (e-1) to limit the available metal.
