Hi experts,
I have two PQR'S
1) GTAW : Deposited weld metal 7mm
2) SMAW + GTAW : Deposited weld metal 70mm, GTAW (16mm), SMAW (54mm)

QUESTION : Can I make WPS Qualification ranges FROM 1.5 TO 200, Deposited weld metal GTAW(max 32mm), SMAW (max 200mm)?
AS PER QW200.2(f): yes
As per QW 200.4(b): No

Thanks
Brown

No...because SMAW is qualified for 5mm - 200mm BM. It is not qualified for 1.5 - 4.99mm.

Thanks David

PWHT will be dictated by the construction code....not part of this thread.

PWHT is an essential variable. See QW-407.1 applicable to both the stated processes.

Yes, and in this case it is "NO PWHT". Just because a WPS is good for 8" doesn't mean it requires PWHT.

While you can do it, why do you really want to? Will it be more confusing to a welder who may weld thicknesses between 1/16" and 3/16? Will he try to make such groove welds with both processes on such thin material? And do you really want him to do so? While I realize your desire to reduce the number of WPSs, sometimes it is better to have more to provide the welder (and inspectors) more specific info to reduce errors nd costs. On one construction project, I saw welders who completed the GTAW portion of a weld only to wait, doing nothing, for the SMAW fill crew to arrive when the weld could have been completed with but one additional layer of GTAW taking about 5 minutes.

Please remember the primary reason for having WPS's is to provide guidance to the welder (as Weldstan has noted).
More info - better result.
