Hello everyone,

I'm trying to design some rafters' collar ties on a new roof. Rafters are 2x10 rafters @ 24" OC, and it spans 12.75'The roof pitch is 6:12. Collar ties are located 1/3 from the ridge board. Please see the file attached.

Can someone please help me to understand what the most effective method of sizing these structural members is? I want to understand how the manual calculations are done too. I highly appreciate your help and time in this matter.

Thank you so much.

Best,

Myla

A word of warning. The purpose of collar ties is not well understood by many in the industry. They are not intended to replace rafter ties. See the following:

1. It is not possible to understand how to size collar ties without understanding their purpose.
2. Do you have rafter ties at or near ceiling level?

Why do you ask a question, then clam up when you get a response?
