Dear Engineers,
I hope you all are fine.
Please refer to the following figure.

I have read the following and compiled some texts from the books of Taranath.

Again elsewhere I found this, where it says "or" (either of them, i understood)

What ticks in my mind is, both the projections need to be greater than 15% of the correspponding plan dimensions, otherwise it won't form a cruciform large enough to concentrate stress. But I couldn't come to a conclusion on this.
Please share your understanding of the matter.

Refer to Table 12.3-1 Horizontal Structural Irregularities , a reentrant corner irregularity occurs when both
plan projections beyond the corner are greater than 15% of the length of the plan dimension in the direction of the projection.

Copy and paste of the clause :

Reentrant Corner Irregularity: Reentrant corner irregularity is defined to exist where both plan projections of the structure beyond a reentrant corner are greater than 15% of the plan dimension of the structure in the given direction.

From all my sources and references, ASCE, the SEAOC Manual, etc...BOTH projects need to be greater than 15% for the irregularity to exist.

Not if they are two separate buildings. I'm not aware of the 15%; I'm not sure it makes sense. If you have a 'significant' change in the building envelope, without defining what significant is, you can have some issues in your building envelope. As soon as you have a transition, it's a matter of closely looking at it to confirm it there is a possible problem.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?
