Hello all,
I have a question regarding piping re-examination, I would appreciate anybody could help me!
WE are installing piping CS in a plant, in compliance with ASME B31.3. It was required 100% RT/UT, and piping were inspected by RX.
Unfortunately, there are some of them which were found with some defects, and they were repaired.
At this stage, the examination at site was modified to UT, and accepted by cliente. Could I perform UT to the welds repaired, and it is still in compliance with ASME B31.3 point 341.3.3?
I am trying to find any interpretation that help to understand if it is accepted or not, because from the technical point of view, I don't find any problem.

Thanks in advance

geodesia,
There is a proposed revision to the code (which has been approved)- Inquiry / TN 13-709 that allows replacement welds to be tested with either UT or RT but repaired welds must still be tested with the same method used on the original weld.

DD

Thanks DekDek for your kind reply.
Because it is acceptes the use of Rt or UT is the reason why we changed to UT actually.
But we have the problemas now with the tests of the repairments,
It would be great to find something to support the use of
UT in a Weld repaired, and tested the original work in RT.

geodesia,
You will not find anything to support what you have done as it does not comply with 341.3.3

341.3.3 Defective Components and Workmanship.
An examined item with one or more defects (imperfections
of a type or magnitude exceeding the acceptance
criteria of this Code) shall be repaired or replaced; and
the new work shall be re-examined by the same methods,
to the same extent, and by the same acceptance criteria
as required for the original work.

The interpretation I quoted above will result in a code revision but it does not affect you - it deals with replaced welds, not repaired welds.
If you must use UT the only way to make these welds compliant to B31.3 is to cut out the repairs and replace with new welds,
Regards,
DD
