RE: Manufacturing Engineering Trainee Position

Hi everyone, my name is Luis and im currently pursuing a B.s in mechanical engineering. Right now i have an A.S in Manufacturing Technology and with only about 6months of experience as a Cnc operator. Although, this experience i obtained it througout several companies so my knowledge is not all that strong, meaning i know a little bit of this and a little bit of that, along with some hands on training that i received at two different schools. So, anywayz I recently ran into an engineering Trainee position for a Manufacturing company and im about to go in for an interview. So herez my question

What is there expectations from a trainee???

p.s someone told me that they are going to look for my willingness to learn and advance in this field so is there anything else i should be aware of that i might want to emphasize at the interview?

That is a good question to ask during the interview. Ive done a number of entry level interview and what employers typically look for is your personality and character.

Asking that question tells the employer your willingness to learn. I wouldnt worry about knowing all the right things to say before you get to the interview.

You seem to be in a good position anyway; you have more practical experience than I do and I was applying for the same type of jobs.

The reason im making a big fuzz out of this is because about three years ago while i was still obtaining my A.S i applied for a trainee position and i didnt make it. Yet, i also did not bother to ask why, so i simply assumed because i was still a newbie, to which i still was because i had not even seen a machine shop before in my life except for the one at school.

I strongly recommend that you pay more attention to your spelling and grammar. Good luck with the job, it sounds ideal for you.

Find out more details about the company. Your knowledge of the company where you could be a potential employee is important.

I agree with Greg, engineers need to be able to communicate properly, spelling and grammar are very important.

For the interview, do your best to look presentable, make sure you come accross as keen, if given a tour of the plant, show an interest in what is going on, ask the interviewer pertinent questions, this always works for me.

When I interview recent grads, I try to get them to talk. I aske lots of questions like: have you seen this, have you done that, tell me about what you know about whatever.

It doesn't matter what the answer is. If he/she knows it great. If not, also great. I am trying to get them to talk freely, to CHAT. I look more for HOW they answer the question, rather than the answer. I am more interested in who they are, rather than what they know.

I don't have any expectations going in. I am looking for someone interested in working for my company and who I think will get along well in the company.

The difficult part for me is to get the interviewee to relax. To do that, I like to get interviewees up out of the chair. People are usually more at ease on their feet. At my office, we can go somewhere, like where they will be working. If the interview is at the college, I try to get them to the white board where we doodle.

One colleague wanted a fresh cup of coffee and took the interview to the coffee shop down the street. He conducted the interview while walking and waiting in line.
