i am a new entrant in power engineering field and interested in computer analysis of power system characteristics e.g load flows and fault calculations.
i intend to write my own amateur power system software.
what computer language will one recommend and what websites could be helpful; am quite broke!

Have a look at online fault current calculator located at This one is written in PHP, operates MySQL database and runs on Apache server.

The calculator process both one- and multibranch power distribution system. Fault current contribution from each motor and the utility source is vectorally added at every point where they intersect. This provides an extremely accurate analysis of the maximum short circuit current any bus can be subject to.

Also, the website features free online arc flash calculator which comes in handy when incident energy, flash protection boundary and PPE recommendations are required.

Currently, there is a one time registration fee of 10.00 $USD to create an account. In return, you get your personal work environment, the tools required to run your short circuit analysis and advantage of saving the entered system. The registration fee is a very small percentage compared to buying commercial software or hiring a consultant to perform the short circuit analysis.

The online short circuit calculator does not come with sophisticated features, graphical interface and an extensive array of pre-programmed equipment data. Nevertheless, the website examples prove that the calculator is suitable to perform accurate symmetrical bolted three phase as well as unbalanced line-to-ground, line-to-line fault calculations.

Wish you the best in your endeavor.
