Redoing our drawing border files

I have some free time in between jobs and I'm trying to update and improve some of our templete files. Currently I'm trying to improve our drawing borders. It's been a long time since I created them and I'm fuzzy on how to do it anymore. I did several searches on the forum here but I am unable to find some of the information I'm looking for. I'll just number my questions for clairity.

1. Shouldn't the drawing template pallet say "Master Drawing Template" instead of "Non-Master"?

2. Is there a list of attribute commands ie. "<W@FILENAME>"?

3. What is the best method for assigning attribute to a model so that they populate the proper fields in the drawing file? For example, I want to assign attribute to my details, then when I select my drawing from the pallet I want the info to get filled in.


I have more but this will get me going.

I would recommend that that go to the Help files and in the 'Introduction to Drafting' section there is a chapter titled 'Customizing your Drafting Environment'. In there you will find information about creating Drawing Templates as well as the list of 'Automatic Text' which can be included on a Drawing.

As for the terms Master versus non-Master, what this is referring to is that the part file which contains the model of the part (or an assembly) is the 'Master' model, while the Drawing file in which the part (or assembly) is added to as a single level 'Component' is the 'Non-Master'. What this means is that if you create a 'Non-Master' template then the system will KNOW to add the part (or assembly) as a component, thus insuring that a Master Model Drawing is created.

As for how to assign Attributes, create them as Part Attributes in the piece Part (Master) as these will automatically be inherited as Object Attributes assigned to the Component in the Master Model Drawing thus making them accessable by the Parts List in the Drawing.

question,
what is the workflow to replace the drawing frame, often we have a to small or to big frame is there something like a macro to switch between sheet sizes and retain every drawing notes?

Depends on how you created your 'frame' (I assume you mean the drawing sheet border) in the first place. I use a Custom Symbol but some people still use the old 'Pattern' function while some just draw it as curves on a visible-only layer in the Drawing Template file itself. If you go the 'Draw it in the Template' route that will probably result in the most difficult editing later on, whereas the use of some single object to represent the drawing border, such as a Symbol or Pattern will make it much easier.

I have used the master model ootb templates ( reworked the bitmap) - in this case switch the sheet size I have used the ootb sheet templates but they need a new sheet - I want to reduce the work recreating everything. I struggling the opportunities. Pattern,drawing-sheet templates, import, custom symboles - read about tabular notes. Is there nothing like common workflow -best practice guide?

This area, drawing borders, are getting some additional attention in the next release of NX (later this year). I don't have all the details yet, but as it matures and we get closer to the launch I'll try and post some updates. I suspect that people may wish to revisit this once these new capabilities are added to NX as there should be some enhanced features and functionality.

What I'm looking to do is multifaceted. First, I seem to be having an issue with the attribute in the master file (solid model) to link and update in the drawing file from my templete. Second, I have been looking at creating a journal file that would give me a GUI that would have the required fields for the attributes I want to attach the the master file. I've seen examples before but never got any copies. I can probally edit something, I just need something to start from.

We are also updating Attributes in the next release of NX including the ability to define 'templates' which will make it easier to support and enforce standards, to say nothing of assuring that there are no problems with misspelled names and improperly-assigned types and values.

Hi John,

With regards to the Symbol files, is it possible to store these files within TC so that a symbol part-file can be managed across multiple instances, ie 1 master. Rather than having to store these types of file on the OS?
