reference sets

My company is new to UG. We've been using NX2 for about six months. What standards for creating and using reference sets are appropriate? UG recommends the use of only "entire part" and "empty" reference sets in assemblies. However, we have created ref. sets in some sub-assemblies to allow the turning off of features (e.g. bolts) in the next higher assembly. This practise was done to decrease the size of the top-level file. The pitfall of this is that when the refence sets are chosen at the top level (eg "no hardware"), the effects are tranferred down to the original lower level.

GM uses PART and REP where the PART set is for the solid and REP for a representation of the solid, a light set of the solid.

Other companies also use a MATE set and FASTENER, where the MATE set is the solid and geometry for position, like datums.

The important thing is to use same sets on all model so you can filter the assembly with sets.

When making reference sets on assemblies be sure to set the correct set on the components before making it. For instanse if making a PART set on the assembly set all components to PART and the select all. You can double check the reference by information in the reference set meny, it should read something like: PART set on XXXX part NOT 1 solid on XXXX part. This way you have ensured that reference set PART on the assembly uses the reference set PART on part XXXX and not a specific solid.

Note that the representation set is not updated automatic, when the model is changed the representation set need to be set again.

No, we're not using advanced assemblies. We do have Teamcenter though.
