I need to choose the right material of construction for a heat exchanger that cools a stream of hydrocarbons (mainly alcohols, light hydrocarbons and water) against water.

I would like to know if someone knows a good reference (handbooks, books or some software) for materials of construction. Very often I need to check the material of construction of equipment and I don't know a good reference.

Thanks, guys ...

Without knowing your background, are you designing/manufacturing a heat exchanger or looking to purchase one given a certain set of service conditions? If your answer is to purchase a heat exchanger, I would work directly with various reputable heat exchanger manufacturers because they have the technical staff to help you with optimizing your tube material selection.

In addition to corrosion concerns you have heat transfer and ultimately cost of material. All of these parameters come into play for optimizing your final material selection.

You can search the internet for information related to corrosion performance of your initial screening of candidate materials. However, there is a whole lot more design evaluation leg work to do before final selection of a suitable material.

There are a hand full of books that would help you a lot.
In order to give you accurate titles I'll have to wait until I am back in the office.

You also need to conssider the criticallity of the exchanger what the consequence of failure would be.

Thank you guys for the answers.

I work with conceptual projects and I usually need estimate equipment prices. So, my goal is to get a sense of material to be used in these equipment in order to improve the accuracy of my calculations.

That is the why of my looking for good references for material selection
