References for the new age

Dear all,

i took a look at the FAQ references list but i could not find much references for topics such as :
- integration of renewable energy (photovoltaics and wind)
- dynamics of renewable energy sources
- DC network analysis (HVDC links, fault identification and interruption in DC networks,...)
- Smart Grids
- FACTs

Anybody has recommendations!

Have you checked with IEEE? They have put on several tutorials on most of the topics that you listed. The printed tutorials are usually a comprehensive look at the subject matter by experts in the field and they are available for purchase.

Another source would be manufacturers and consultants. The manufacturers like to write papers about successful projects and these are usually available for download at no cost.

CIGRE has many of the same topics discussed as IEEE. They meet in Paris every other year and another location in the off year.

With maybe one exception, these are not new age topics.

Maybe if you can define "smart grid" someone can offer a reference. It is basically a meaningless term.

thank you for your reply.

With references i mainly mean Textbooks such as the ones listed in the FAQ section which most deal with classical (and valuable) electrical engineering aspects with publication dates going back to the mid of the last century.

Today the utilities are facing the challenge of installing new generation sources which were not used or minimally used in the past with new distribution concept and protection aspects, hence the "new age" tag.

I am interested in topics concerning integration of renewable energy sources in then grid. The first issues that were noticed with such integration were voltage stability issues which were mainly addressed by the national Grid Codes of the utilities which focused on this aspects for the last few years of the Wind Energy boom (since 2005 or so). Now new concerns are rising for such energy sources related to frequency control and to my knowledge a the moment the problem is way ahead of the solution especially in small systems such as Ireland.

The second topic which i am interested in is Smart Grids.

As a result I would like to know if any of the members would recommend textbooks for such systems which were not addressed in the FAQ section. Although these aspects of course fall under the umbrella of electrical engineering textbooks that are found in the FAQ section but now it is the time where dedicated references should be posted. Unfortunately when i head to Amazon to purchase one of those references i do not find much feedback there which is the reason i am asking about a feedback here.

From my side i would recommend the following books in those areas:

- Wind Power in Power Systems (2nd ed. 2012) ISBN 0470974162
- Grid Integration and Dynamic Impact of Wind Energy (July 2012) (hopefully it will be good)

dpc i couldnt agree more with you.
Smart Grids is the topic which everyone is working with and nobody knows what it is or what are the expectations and limitations.
If you search books you will find a bunch with 0 feedback.

If you search in any online book store( eg flipkart.com, amazone.com) you will get dozens of books on each of above topics.But how good these are,some one has to go through and decide.ABB site has special portals on these topics( smart grid, energy efficiency,HV DC,FACTS etc) where you can get a number of tutorials, completed projects etc etc.

Sometime back, I raised a query on smartgrid in this forum and there was little response. I will take up that thread and let us try to define and understand it.
