What is your experience and position on referral fees by an unlicensed design consultant from a PE exempt industry ? The Professional Engineering ethics standards seem pretty clear and prohibit such fees to be received or given by the PE unless they are from a sales or marketing company that is retained by the PE doing the engineering work. However, if your a PE and you do also work in exempt industries it seems that the referral fee issue is becoming more common and will have to be dealt with at some point.

Doesn't matter if the work is in an exempt industry, if you are a PE, it is not ethical.

Something that may not be obvious is that an "exempt industry" may or may not exempt consultants to that industry- depends on how they write the state rules- just a side note.

If you are a PE it doesn't matter where you work, you must follow the requirements of your license and practice on;y what you know and be ethical in your decision making process (money makes us not ethical is the stretch here i think)

getting fee's is not part of the license, it doesn't matter if it is industry norm for non-Engineers in your field. if your field is exempt then you don't need to be licensed, but if you are licensed then you cannot turn the license off when convenient.
