Regarding suggestion for developing an adhesion model using Abaqus

Dear all,

I have a query regarding simulating adhesion using Abaqus. It would be really great if you could suggest some suitable reference or a methodology to solve the problem.

The problem:
I have two deformable plastic parts in my model, one part impacts on an another fixed part. I was wondering if it is possible to specify a criterion during this collision simulation that would enable adhesion between those parts when the stress or strain in either of the parts reaches a critical value? I know, I can use cohesive surfaces to simulate bonding by adding a cohesive strength to surface. But, I want to use a criterion pertaining to the interacting parts and not just surfaces.

Also, alternatively, can the kinetic energy of a part be modified to zero, as soon as the part reaches the critical stress/strain value. This can also be a way to mimic adhesion.

Any suggestions or help would be most welcomed.

You can program a (V)UINTER and do whatever you want.
But first you should check if general contact with cohesive behavior isn't already what you need.
 
Assuming you have a theoretical formulation at hand, then know that coding a user subroutine can vary from trivial to horrendous. I have seen code from some of the "top" academic labs only to find out I was better off writing my own code. If you work for a company, you may be better off hiring a consultant to do a professional grade job (with V&V, some QA standard, documentation, support). If you are a student, then make sure your FORTRAN is strong, implement the code independent of your solver (write a wrapper script), and then implement the code in use with Abaqus. Ideally, you want to have an independent symbolic math implementation for verification.

By the way, unless you enjoy working in Linux, just getting the software environment to work right can be a hassle.
