Does anyone have an opinion or technical/legal reference (UK/EU preferred) on the requirement to perform independent and competent checks of relief valve calculations. My experience is that this is common/good practice but I am struggling to find a credible source.

Many thanks

It's common/standard practice for companies to require a peer review for relief designs, but it's not a code requirement. In EU countries, PED requires that relief designs are approved by a Notified Body to ensure that PED requirements are met. One could argue that that is a technical review, but in my experience most companies don't regard it as such - they still require their own independent review before it goes to the NoBo. That's done for obvious reasons. These are safety devices, so high degree of technical design integity is needed.

When direction is not dedicted, follow US Codes to be safe. In my opinion.
