Relief valve - releasing oil back to the sump or to the pump suction line

I need to install a relief valve after an oil pump to stop excess pressure developing.
What could be the differences in release oil into to the oil sump or into the pump suction line?

Back to the sump is the safer method. By going back into the suction line you are essentially creating a recirculation loop - fluid from discharge goes thru PSV into suction line and back through pump again. So, system is protected from overpressure but now you are starting to heat up the pump....if it continues like this there is the potential for pump damage.

But,

caution is needed in avoiding direct impact on to the sump; causing erosion in any way!
