Remote control of Irrigation Valves

Is anyone aware of remote control systems for irrigation valves? Such systems would allow for actuation of valves at sites without requiring wires.

While working as a volunteer on the Kibbutz SDE-BOQUER, near Beer-Sheva in Israel, I was impressed by the degree of automation of the irrigation infrastructure, which was computer-controlled, but via a micro-hydraulic actuator system, which I didn't understand. The University of the Negev is almost next door, and I'm sure someone there could give you an idea of what might be both available and practical.<br>

We are putting in a pipe an old channel. We need to install maybe 123 remote controlled valves to deliver water.

Working pressures in pipe, on first section will be between 0 and 0.3 bar. Second to fourth sections will be on 0.3 to 0.7 bar. Rest of pipe will have pressures over 0.7 bar.

We think to use Motorola Irrinet, using Piccolo operated solenoid valves.

Can one control solenoid valves on pressures under 0.3 bar? and under 0,7 bar? (maybe with hydraulic control, using public potable water as pressure source?)

It exists another control mechanism useful in case of low pressures in the pipe?

What type of power source will you use?
We designed a self contained fluid delivery system that can be programmed as a unit. However these product needs at least a 12 volts power source.
If one was to provide some type of solar charger than a system can be built. Never looked at the cost of such system.

There is a new system designed by Contracom (UK) Limited, that does Irrigation scheduling, and remote valve control by Radio, GPRS, Satellite or Infrared communication.

Gilmour make a fine little battery operated one zone controller that works very well for us in the field when we don't have electricity. Depends on how big you are going for it to be cost effective.
