Remote IO with Fiber Connection 1

I was wondering if anyone knew of a module that can pickup 8 discrete inputs, and send it down fiber link to then get the 8 discrete inputs back out to then wire them down to the PLC. I can find remote IO modules that do this using a Ethernet cable, but nothing with fiber. I have a 2000' run with fiber existing, and spare. Don't want to have to pull 16 #14's 2000'.

If you have something which works on ethernet then it's trivially simple to run ethernet over fibre for a mile or two on multimode fibre. If you want to go further then you can use monomode fibre which is slightly harder to work with (you will definitely need external help for termination) but still very practical.

Mono-mode and single-mode are interchangeable terms. But I did leave out the "-" so you got me there...

LOL I read the 'mono' as 'multi' and thought you repeated yourself!

I must say I started with fiber as a sophomore in college and have read a thick Laser/Fiber trade journal every month for about 25 years and I have never seen "single mode" replaced with "mono-mode". You crazy Brits..

If you really want to connect the I/O modules peer-to-peer, (with no PLC in between), then the Acromag modules you linked to would work just fine, you simply need media convertors at either end of the fiber link.

The media conversion could be either a single FX-TX convertor, or a switch with fiber and copper ports.

I don't believe that the SEL devices can connect peer-to-peer. I think they are intended to connect to a communications processor, not to each other.

That's a pretty nice summation controlsdude. Essentially what I had to do in college. I even had samples from Corning's first foray into the field.
