Renaming all files 2

Is there an easy way to rename a whole assembly including all parts? We add the customer name as a suffix to each part. When a new machine is needed, we copy the most recent assembly and want to replace the old customer name with the new customer name. By using Solidworks Explorer I know we can add a suffix or prefix but that just keeps adding another name to the end of the file. Thanks for the help.

You rename using SolidWorks Explorer. Read thru help menu, it is there. If you have PDMWorks, you can rename there also.

I know about that but you have to rename each file one at a time then update the references. I was looking for a way to replace a suffix for every part of an assembly since these ones have over 150 parts.

You can rename all parts/subassemblies using "Replace" function found in "Save As" command. With an assembly or drawing document open, select "Save As", then click "Reference" button. If you click "Select All" button in "Edit Referenced Files Location", you will be able to rename all the files. This will allow you change the customer name quickly.

But I just want to let you know, the way you are handling your SolidWorks documents is not most efficient. A better way is to create your documents based on objects (parts or assemblies). Parts or assemblies have nothing to do with customers. Association between your parts/assemblies is established through sales orders.

If you create a standard, generically named set of parts & assemblies (ie; no customer name), then you could use SW Explorer to copy all those parts & assemblies ... & add the customer name as a suffix at the same time. All references should be automatically transferred.

We need to do it this way because customer has different preferences on purchased parts,the mills that these machines go into are diferent sizes and the foundations are different for every one too. We also need to use the last made version to create a new one because newer ideas get invented when designing each machine.So we cannot create a standard set of parts with a few custom ones.

Have your PDM Administrator look into “PDMWorks 2005 VaultAdmin” Projects, in Project commands, Copy Project. This will copy everything in a folder to another folder with something added at the end of the name or if you want in front of the name. You do not have to except “Copy of”.

If you modified the generically named parts/assys first, they would always be the latest version. Then you could do the SW Explorer, copy & suffix routine.
