Renaming Dimension Symbols

I am trying to rename my dimensions so that I can display symbols instead of values and have a clean, sequential index of dimensions (i.e. d10, d11… instead of the default names assigned by Pro/E). However, I occasionally get an error message “This symbol is reserved or exists already” when I don’t already have any dimensions with that name. If I do a search in the part model, I get a result like “d30:F12(REVOLVE_1)” but there are no dimensions named d30 in my REVOLVE_1 feature. Does anyone know why this happening and how to change this so I don’t have to skip numbers? Thank You!

The probem is that d30 is used for a dimension somewere else in the part. You need to find that dimension a rename it before you use d30 elsewhere.

Create a drawing, show all dimensions, switch dims so dimensions show symbols. Find offending dimension. It's in there somewhere.

There are times when a dimension does not appear in a drawing. It might be easier to do an info part, then search the info file for d30.

I've checked each and every dimension, by showing the dimensions on the drawing as well as by stepping through each feature individually in my part model, and I cannot find any dimension with that name.

Why not just make your re-named dimensions different from the default style? When you are re-naming, call them "Dim30" instead of "d30"?

I have had situations where a dim symbol name was used, the dimension deleted & it was not possible to use the same symbol again for a different dimension. Pro/E seems to have a glitch in it's database where it doesn't free up the name to be reused.

Haha, definitely too kind! Thanks for the advice everybody. I was afraid that it would be a glitch and nothing I can do about it. I think I'll take MechEng2005's advice and just use a different naming convention.
