I've used SW for several years but up until recently I was on an older version (06/07) that permitted you to double-click the reference and select the new one.

I've changed references in SW2009 both by "breaking" the link (changing file name) which lets you find the new one but that's not always possible (original document is read-only). The "correct" way to do it as I understand it seems overly cumbersome when dealing with needing to change both the directory of the reference and manually changing the file name of the reference.

Is there something I'm overlooking or did they really make it that much more difficult to change a reference? Any tricks to making it less cumbersome when doing this multiple times?

I've just noticed in SW2011-SP2, the double-click on the name function has been returned. Anyone know when that happened?

I just tried that and it seems to function the same way as if I had double clicked the name (i.e. highlights it and allows me to text-edit it).

I can't imagine I misinterpreted what you are suggesting so perhaps 2009 works differently?

This is what the help says:
Click Open or File, Open.

In the Open dialog box, click References.

The Edit Referenced File Locations dialog box appears.

Edit the path or filename using one of the following methods:

Click in a cell and type to change the name or path.

Double-click in a cell, browse to a new folder or type a new name in the Open dialog box, then click Open.

Select cells under In Folder, or select the entire column by clicking In Folder. Click Replace and enter a word to find and a word to replace it with. (For example, change "\samples" to "\archive" to open one or all part files from the archive directory.) Click the Match case check box if the case is significant in the search.

Seems to imply that you can't double click the file to select a new one--the double click to change folder works as advertised but that's not nearly as helpful as simply selecting the file in the new location.

Which SP of SW2009?

A year or two ago SW changed the selection function in the Ref dialogue box. I believe they even had a triple-click option at one time. The change was met with a fair bit of flack and a compromise was made. It appears they have fully reverted to the 06/07 style now.

No later than 2010-SP0. That's what I started on and it's always worked that way for me.
