Replace in kind and code to follow

Costumer is replacing a kind of an equipment. However, for assurance they would like to check the steel beams. The building is old two issues here:
1)The loads can be used the original design loads, right?

2)The AISC code to check the beams also can go to the original design time AISC (like AISC 9TH Edition)or the latest AISC 14 Edition needs to be used?

For most of the beams I've checked that were existing I've used the loading from the time of design but new design techniques. Generally speaking the new design techniques should result in a comparable beam strength compared to old design.

Depending on the Jurisdiction though, they may require you to design for new loading depending on the scale of the modification.

So you're using the "in kind" business as justification for essentially treating this as an existing building assessment? I see the logic but I can't point to a robust code provision to back you up. You might be at the mercy of your AHJ.

Since you are using AISC, I assume you are under the IBC code. Take a look at the International Existing Building Code (IEBC). It spells out conditions for "grandfathering", alterations, repair, etc.
