Any reasoning for not replacing the material of our current gear (SAE J431 G3000) with a ductile Iron (65-45-12)?
I am replacing a gear that is a known failure mode in a switchmachine on the railroad. I would like to get away from a cast blank of the J431 Iron and go with readily available gear blanks of 65-45-12? Are there any reasons why I shouldn't?
I was going to use a 1045 steel gear but I am worried about the mate galling and cold welding itself to the the 1045 since the mate is a lower grade steel part.
Any suggestions?
