I have no experience nor knowledge of composite sections built up sections.
Now vendor for our project is suggesting that we replace W18x76 with a built up section.
The thickness of steel plates is 18mm and 12mm, connected by fillet weld 8mm at both sides of web plate.

Hi dik

Sorry I cannot find as yet what the 106/109 is but the Med is the design moment.

Thanks... I'll go through the paper again to see if I can apply the methodology. I find, sometimes, papers leave gaping holes where they assume you know what they are talking about.

dik,

106/109 is a misprint. It should read 10^6/10^9 (for unit conversion).

Thanks, Bart...

dik,

I believe that the standard formula for s should read:
s = 400 x 9000 x 285/ (1.6 x 10[sup]9[/sup]),
but I don't know where 9000 or 285 comes from, offhand.

W[sub]p[/sub] is not defined, but appears to be a volume with units of mm[sup]3[/sup]

Quite a confusing article.

From the formula, it's likely related to Section Modulus.

I think W[sub]p[/sub] is the statical moment of the flange about the centroid of the shape (which we call Q).
Flange area = 30*300 = 9000; y = 300 - 15 = 285.
