We currently use 1144 steel for motor shafts. This material is not the easiest to machine and we are considering a different material. My initial inclination is an 11L41. It has a higher machinability index with similiar material properties. The material must also be magnetic. Does anybody have any other suggestions of possible materials that will machine easily with high tolerance/finish and is magnetic?

I would definitely look at 11L41. It should make a significant improvement in machining with almost no drawbacks except a slight cost difference. It is widely available.

17.4 ph esr maybe worth a look!
I use it for various componants and find it easily machinable and it gives a very good finish.

Stainless steel 416.
I design high speed motors, (50k-250k) rpm. We use 416 stainless for motors up to about 100k, and 4043 alloy steel for faster motors. The 416 SST machines nice and is highly magnetic as is the 4043 alloy steel, but it does not machine as nicely, some grinding is required to get a good finish, but for the speeds we run, grinding is necessary to ensure low runout.
Edson Campos
edsoncampos@earthlink.net

Panther manufacture's crankshaft's out of 1144 material as well. We have just recently started using 1215 as a alternative. The material properties and strengths are comperable and there is a significant cost savings as well as a increase in machineability.

I agree with Panther. I have used 1215 for pumps and motor shafts and it machines well.
