Hi there,

are there any requirements for the drawings of piping acc. to B31.3? I can't find anything.
For example information which has to be on the drawing?

None whatsoever in B31.3. But how do you communicate the design to the builder of your pipe? There is a reason that an isometric sketch with bill-of-material is 'usual & customary'.

definition in 31.3

engineering design: the detailed design governing a piping
system, developed from process and mechanical
requirements, conforming to Code requirements, and
including all necessary specifications, drawings, and
supporting documents.

The required information is that which is sufficient to transmit the design in the designers head into the head of the person (or machine) responsible for purchasing the items and fabricating it without the use of Vulcan mind transfer or telepathy.

If you don't know what Vulcan mind transfer is you're too young....

My motto: Learn something new every day

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way

JanMi,
There are many drawings that Piping is shown on.
These include:
P&ID = This is a schematic drawing showing all equipment, piping and Instruments in a non-dimensional symbol format. Look here: Piping Plan = Look here: Piping Section = A side view of what is shown on a Piping Plan
Piping Isometric = Look here:

oh, sorry, i meant the piping isometric.

LittleInch, that's exactly what i was looking for! Thanks a lot!

I should clarify something. I'm a german student working on the requirements of the B31.3. The company i'm working for has all these documents. In my opinion there is missing some important information on the isometrics (welding information for example). At this point my opinion is not enough, i have to prove it. So i'm looking for paragraphs where this is exactly written down as a requirement. All that in a foreign language. That's fun!

Thanks for all the help!

JanMi,
I am sorry, I forgot to include another drawing shat shows piping.
In fact it is the one that answers your question about welding.
In my opinion there is missing some important information on the isometrics (welding information for example).

The drawing that most projects include is the Pipe Fab Shop 'Spool Drawing'.
- It is most often an 8-1/2" x 11" or A1 size sheet.
- It is produced by the Pipe Fab Shop and shows one complete pipe spool.
- It can be an Orthographic or Isometric drawing.
- It will have a Title Block section
- It will include a graphic section showing the configuration
- It will have a Bill-of-Material (BOM)
- It will have a Listing of all Welds (on that sheet)
- It will have a Notes: section
- All items of material on the drawing will be tagged with a number to match the listing in the BOM
- All Welds on the drawing will be tagged with a Letter to match the listing in the Weld List on the drawing.
- The Weld List includes information about the type of weld (Butt, Fillet, etc) the NDE (Non Destructive Examination)requirements, the PWHT (Post Weld Heat Treatment) requirements.
- The Title Block includes information needed to identify the Project, the Client, the Spool Number, Weight, Painting requirements, and other date specific to the spool.

Others may have suggestions and are encouraged to add them.
