Does structural engineer stamp still required? :)
 
Seems like a large span for such a small angle lintel. Apparently the IRC is telling us that the steel isn’t doing much of anything.

If the architect puts in control joints which line up with and door jambs then all bets are off and the masonry won’t arch.
 
Rare that control joints are used in residential (at least around here).
These requirements echo what a tech from the Brick Institute of America told me about 10 years ago.
Basically using the ladder wire to make a deep, reinf. masonry beam.
Also, why 5x3 1/2x5/16"? Seems like an odd size. Might as well use 6x4x5/16" as it is easier to get. What math are they using to determine that thickness?
