Resigning gracefully... 4

Most likely tomorrow I will be resigning from my job at a company. I have been there a little over a year and I knew this day was coming at that time as well.

The reason is so I can finish my masters degree in another field, which will likely lead to a better job/salary in the future. By quiting this job, I should be able to finish the degree more quickly. I really have to be onsite in the labs during the day to finish up.

Nonetheless, although management can be harsh at this company, I have some sadness in doing it.

Does anyone have any advice on how to resign gracefully?

Additionally, I wouldn't mind offering to help out part-time, but the scope would have to be very limited.

I dread this discussion tomorrow. Call me a coward, or afraid of letting people down or creating conflict. I'll be honest, I am more scared because the manager I will turn notice into is a bit of a hothead!

I'll let you know how it goes, but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

EngineerDave,

That's great that they offered you part-time employment. A part-time engineering job is a rare opportunity. Although, a Research Assistant position for your grad school also comes to mind.

If you do some part-time work for your old company, make sure you keep your studies as the prority and don't feel guilty if you don't always come through for them. That's for them to deal with, not you. They know why you are leaving and so it will automatically be understood by them that school comes first.

Again, nice going and good luck with your future!

Regards,
Mark

Yeah, I'm only two days into the full-time grad work and I can see the part-time work thing will be really difficult.

I'm at school now, actually feeling a bit overwhelmed (a phrase I picked up from my girlfriend) only because of a lack of structure to what I'm supposed to be doing here. Not to mention, I have some labwork to do here that I have very little clue on how to complete. Nothing like starting over in a new field! It's an exciting challenge no doubt, but frustrating at times!

Thanks for the update. Best of luck to you.

When in a situation where you feel you dont' have enough structure, build your own.
