Response Modification Factor 1

Hello peeps,

I am trying to design a pavilion that has two walls perpendicular to each other in one side and columns all around the rest of the building. The response medication factor for the walls are 6 and for the columns are 1.5. Which one should I use when calculating the Cs for the seismic force?

You should provide more information on this.
Which country, which code, which code version, etc.
Also - there typically isn't a factor for a singular column per se...but rather frame or wall assemblies.

Hi Jae,

I am in California and I am using a ASCE 7-10 for the seismic parameters. I am looking at table 12.2-1 letter F # 7, timber frames, for the response modification coefficient.

If we are talking 2 different LFRS (Lateral Force Resisting Systems) in the same orthogonal direction, unless it can be considered as a "dual system" or one of the other options.....it should be designed by the more stringent values. (In this case, using (for example) a R value of 1.5.)

I'd have to say though, I'd be surprised if the columns attract much force unless they are part of a moment frame.
