hey ya,

I just found this problem from 2011 - however it was not solved completely:

I have a model consists of three dynamic steps, step1, step2 and step3.

"A force, whose magnitude varies temporally, applies to a cantilever beam during these three steps. I defined an amplitude called "AMP" to prescribe this variation.

Job1 is submitted to analyze the system in step one. The type this job is "Analysis". This job is completed successfully.

Then Job2 with the type "Restart" restarts and the analysis continues during the step2. The job is completed successfully as well.

However, job3 whose type is "Restart" can not be submitted and I recieve this error message:
"AN AMPLITUDE CURVE WITH THE NAME AMP HAS BEEN DEFINED PREVIOUSLY. THIS AMPLITUDE CURVE CAN NOT BE REDEFINED".

When I look at the input files I see the amplitude "AMP" is written in the first input file but not in the second input file which both are reasonable, I think. But the amplitude is again written in the third input file and I think that makes the problem.

I do not know how to set the option in order to prevent this problem."

Someone recommended to manipulate the input-file manually.
However the manipulation of the input file might be time-consuming and a solution in ABAQUS itself might be preferable.
Another way to solve this is to delete the previous defined amplitudes in the third model (the second restart analysis). This solves the problem.

Does anyone know if this is an ABAQUS bug in general, or is it triggered by the user?

All model data are reused in a restart analysis. So you cannot define a amplitude with a name AMP, when a amplitude with that name was defined before in that model. You can reuse that amplitude or define new amplitudes with other names.

I thought the usual way to do a restart analysis is to copy the previous model an add another step.

1. Original Model
2. 1st Restart Model ( --> Copied original model + added 1 step)
3. 2nd Restart Model ( --> Copied 1st Restart Model + added 1 step)

This also worked fine in the second model, where I did not delete the previous defined amplitudes.
However it is necessary in the 2nd Restart Model to delete the amplitudes of the "original model".

No, a restart analysis means, that with *Restart the old model data are read automatically and the user has only to add the new step (or nothing, if a aborted step shall only be finished).

Creating new sets or amplitudes is optional, since this does not change the model.
