We have created Reuse Components where we can select on certain parameters and based on expressions the model updates accordingly. But we are trying to figure out how to have our Description Attribute update accordingly. So if I want to put in a Guide Pin we modeled, and make the L1 expression = 2.50" and the D1 expression = 10.00", I want my Description attribute to update accordingly as TPC-250-X-10. I'm pretty sure it's possible because the reuse components that NX provides update accordingly. Any thoughts on how to do this?

Forgot to mention, I am currently using NX 6.0.5.3.

Thanks,

First open the Master part model template for the reusable component and create a Part Attribute titled 'Description' (or whatever title it appropriate) and give it some default value.

Now go to...

Tools - > Part Families...

...and when the dialog opens you should see two lists, the one at the bottom showing you the items for which columns have already been created in the Family Table spreadsheet. Near the top of the Dialog is an option item titled 'Available COlumns'. Change this to 'Attributes' and you will see all of the available Attributes names in your Part File. Select the 'Description' (or whatever you named it) attribute and then press the 'Add Column' button in the middle of the dialog between the two lists. Now when you open the Spreadsheet by selecting the 'Edit' button near the bottom of the dialog you will find an additional column has been added to the family table spreadsheet. Now just fill-in the Attribute values for each family member entry in the table (spreadsheet) and when you leave the spreadsheet make sure that you save the changes when asked and return to the NX dialog where you hit OK and then save your part file.

Now please note that this will only effect NEW parts created from the Master Template. Any existing reuse components already created will NOT include this Attribute and therefore will need to be recreated in order for it to be added.

Thanks John, that worked great! I wish I would have asked this a year ago instead of waiting on our VAR to figure it out, which they still haven't.
