Hi.

I am currently designing a rigid flex board and was wondering if anyone could recommend a fabrication/assembly house. We will be making about 100 on this run and are interested in getting as low of a per-board cost as possible without sacrificing quality. The boards also have to be here in 2 weeks, so a quick turn is necessary. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

pacej51;

I stongly suggest that on a new project, like this seems to be, you really, Really, REALLY, should find a place near the Cambridge area to work with. Rigid flex boards have a lot of gotchas and options that are best discussed face to face with the board house. A really great recommendation of a place 300 miles away is a bad choice.

Once you have someone building the board the way you want it then you could send a sample to other houses and probably get what you need but until then.... bad move t'would be.

Might be tough to get a good deal on such a small run. Setting up all of the dies alone is going to cost you a bundle. I generally go overseas for the majority of my orders, working with houses I've worked with for years to ensure I get consistent quality. Even then, prices can be harsh on smaller runs, particularly when they include so many steps (flex design/cutting, rigid design/cutting, assembly of the two, etc.).

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a rigid flex board?

Flexible circuit board with rigid circuit boards embedded here and there along the way.

Like the stuff you might find in a hard diskdrive(older) or in a printer, conducting umpteen signals to the print head.

Thanks itsmoked.

Sort of thought it might be that type of thing.
