I have a manifold with 5 three inch rtj flanges at 3000 psi. I'm having trouble getting the rings to seal, mainly due to bad alignment. Any ideas on how to do it without over torquing the flanges. I tried teflon coated rings but ones still leaking? Thanks for the thoughts.

OK, I'm reaching here, but let me ask the "dumb" question. Your NOT using a "octagonal" ring in a old "oval" style ring joint connection are you?
IF that's not an issue, then I'd look at using "RX" type ring gaskets. I understand they have a better seating capabilities. Check out this link below. Good Luck! ...Mark

Hello Scooter911, Alot depends whether you want a temporary solution or a longer term solution. I would go with the longer term solution and fix the bad alignment.

A company called EGC Enterprises in Cleveland, OH makes a more adaptable type of ring joint gasket. It has graphite elements to allow for sealing between slightly mis-aligned ring joint flanges.

Thanks for the help, it's a rectangular groove an I put teflon coated stainless oval rings in the grooves. I'm at 600 ft. lbs. and still have one leaking pretty bad. Called Dan-Lock, got voicemail. Talked to Jeff Bernthisel at EGC and they are looking to see if their seal can do it.

Have a good day, it's blowing pretty hard here in Houston.

Hey Scooter ...if your fighting seating problems I wouldn't suggest using "oval" ring gasket in a "octagonal" grooved flange. That's ok to do in a pinch, but my 1st choice would be to go with the octagonal gasket which the flange was originally designed for. Also look into the soft cast iron rings, they have a good compressability, IF your line commodity will allow. Good Luck ...stay dry down there!! ...Mark

Thanks Mark,

What do you think about teflon coating a octagonal soft cast iron ring? Water's gone down, only had a 6 foot tidal surge.

Scooter ...Don't see much advantage in teflon coating any ring gasket, normally when your using ring joint flanges the design pressures are very high & teflon would not have much sealing capability. Plus if your design temperature is up around 400 deg F, then teflon coating would be a waste. Again, my 2 cents. ...Mark
