1. Does anyone have experience of failures or persistent leakage of type R ring joints or the justification and selection criterea [qualitative of quantitative] for choosing RX rings [pressure energised] instead of R rings, apart from providing a more reliable seal? Details of the application are - hydrocarbon service, ANSI B16.5 1500# & API 5000#. Thankyou. [the military mark is an error]

The problem with some R gaskets is getting sufficient seating force. Usually we only have problems with the larger bolt sizes (example 11" 5000). In these cases the installers have a hard time getting enough oomf out of the hammer wrench and keeping the bolt force constant around the bolt circle. Another application for RX gaskets is where large temperature changes occur. A high preload at 60 F won't be so high at 600 F.
