Hello All,
Need your help on rip rap specifications. I am sizing rip rap for an outfall and carried out the calculation using US Federal Highway standards. This results in rip rap of classes 1 - 6. Does anyone know how would that translate into CA DOT Caltrans rock gradation. Caltrans has it separated into unit weight of rock. Thank you.

Call CAL-trans and get their specs. Remember to write the name and phone number of the person you talk to.

assuming you calculated D50 size and want to convert to caltrans weight spec, you will need to assume SG=2.5 (or another value if you have a specific quarry in mind), assume your rock is approximately spherical and then calculate weight of the rock using the equation for volume of a sphere. Alternatively, you can assume a cube shape. Recommend using nothing smaller than light class. Also, keep in mind that the caltrans spec is not "percent passing" but "percent larger".
