My office is working on a project were we want a rivet to fail at a specific shear value. Most textbooks and references, like MIL-HDBK-5, give information for the minimum strength. We need to know the average strength and the variance of the population. There will most likely be differences between rivet manufactures and even from lot to lot, but can anyone give us an idea of what the distribution would look like or were we could find it. Will the standard deviation from the average strength be 50, 100 or 250 lbs? In particular we are looking at rivets like a MS20470DD5 or MSDD20470AD6 rivets. Thanks

Check out my post in aircraft engineering (joint strength tables), particularly the response from SamX. This won't answer your question, but might lead to some better info. Also, have you researched the NACA papers ( for older rivet test reports?

Please let me know if you find any references or values for MS20426DD5 rivets.

good luck
