Hello All,

I work in a plant where we use a reverse osmosis system for water purification instead of our DI loop. The only issue with this is that unlike the DI system, we don't have a direct reading for the total amount of gallons it uses.

Is it possible to use an ultrasonic flow meter on the systems main pipe to first get the flow velocity, then the volumetric flow rate in order to get an idea of how much water the system is using in about a day's time?

My initial plan was to run a study over the course of a day then a week in order to have a series of comparable values, though with the volumetric flow rate how would I be able to calculate the total amount of gallon usage in a day?

yup you can check the velocity by ultrasonic flowmeter. Then you can find the flow rate by using continuty equation.

Get a flow transmitter that includes a totalizer. Here are two examples of that mate to an ultrasonic flowmeter, there are many others. Google this: liquid flow meter totalizer ultrasonic

Disclosure: I am semi-retired from Kele, and I currently have a consulting agreement with them.

Also Data Industrial may have some -- but I'm not sure.

There a zillion totalizing meters like this that employ differential-pressure, paddlewheel, turbine, or target meters -- but of course, you cannot stick one of those in DI water. Some of them, though, will take a 4-20 mA flow signal for velocity.

Best to you,

Goober Dave

I hope your company isn't mistaking RO filtering for deionization.
