Rod Load Question

Hi guys. Been awhile since I messed with recips so I have a dumb question.

I am working with a 4-throw 3-stage separable. One of the throws has a nameplate that gives a max rod load. None of the other throws has a max rod load on their nameplates. Does that mean that rod load is only applicable to that particular throw or is it for the entire frame?

I can't remember if rod load is only pertinent to a throw or is pertinent to the entire frame. Thanks guys! Pete

Rod load is applicable for every throw using a piston rod... commonly, the maximun allowed rod load is the same for every rod in a throw for a compressor model(frame), even though, some frames could have rod models with different maximun allowed rod load. You must be concern about it and avoid to let the pressure up higher than the maximun allowed rod load in throw. That is calculated with the succion and discharge pressure and the piston diameter for compression rod load and succion and discharge pressure and the piston and rod diameter for tension rod load. Besides, single or double action affects rod load... Any question so far?

In all of our four cylinder compressors, all four rods are the same size. All four rods have the same maximum rod load limit. The actual rod loads may be drastically different between the different stages. But, the design rod load limit should be the same.

This may not be applicable to all machines, especially if the rods are different diameters.
