Roller chain Simulation in MSC ADAMS

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to replicate a bycicle chainring in ADAMS machinery (Basically is just a roller chain with two sprockets). I made the sprockets in a different software (Inventor) and imported them into my model.

Now, the problem is that one of the sprockets is not circular (So It can't be auto-generated in the software). I'm wondering if there's an actual way to simulate a chain between these two sprockets in ADAMS machinery. I'm new in ADAMS but I kind of know how to use it's chain module, however I don't know how to deal with this semi-oval sprocket, as normally all the sprockets are auto-generated with this tool.

Is there something to do with it?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Can you auto generate a circular sprocket with the same number of teeth as your elliptical one, and then modify the geometry in the adm file using a script in say python or matlab (or excel if you are feeling brave) to stretch the sprocket and move the chain to the desired geometry?

Or, get your big-boy pants on and alter the py file that autogenerates the sprocket, if /Machinery uses py.

Or ask MSC.

Cheers

I’m not an Adams user but I know that in a different MBD product (RecurDyn) I can auto-generate a track system (sounds like a similar process to creating your chain) and then convert all the links into general bodies. This should allow for arbitrary sprocket geometry by adding the contact between every link and the sprocket/wheels manually or in a script. I would look into whether it’s possible to do something similar with Adams.
